5 Quick Snacks in Malaysia/ Singapore

Don't lie. We have all encountered that one night where we lie in bed dreaming of all the exercises and work outs we should try out the next day and how we can lose 5lbs or even what diet we should take on.... but unfortunately, there are types of food in the world that can kidnap your dream and rip it apart.

The following snacks are the ones I have tried and LOVED in Malaysia and Singapore since we went there during Christmas (that's why I'm bombarding you guys with M'sia and S'pore posts... heh). They're not exactly traditional snacks but they were prepared, presented and priced awesomely... In addition  these are a great snack that can fill you up and energize you when you're in a rush to have fun!

 1. George and Dragon Cafe's Mash Potatoes:
PERSONALLY, I though these mash potatoes were the bomb but my family didn't think so... If you really like your potatoes really soft and drenched in gravy, you'd be in heaven while taking a bite of this. The potoato was finely mashed and wasn't lumpy at all. I liked how it didn't taste dramatically buttery where your body already signals your weight gain after the first bite but instead it tasted more modest and potato-y. The gravy was just right- wasn't too salty and the consistency matched the mash very well. The theme of the cafe is the medieval period (hence, "DRAGON") and a full body armor is situated by the door. Kinda quirky and fun.... The address is listed below if you're interested:

2. Malacca's Chicken Rice Balls:
If you find yourself constantly looking for a place where you can admire the historical architecture, roam around street markets and look for great buys while enjoying awesome food, the Malacca food street is perfect for you. Our family found ourselves in a small outdoor cafe where they served a variety of cuisines in which we ordered the Chicken Rice Balls as an appetizer. If you've never tried them before they are definitely something I recommend  I love how each rice ball is the perfect proportion for 2-3 pieces of chicken. The rice balls have a very strong taste of chicken oil which is DELICIOUS. Also, the chicken was very fresh and also tasted wonderful. Now before you go off yelling at the kitchen saying that their chicken is cold, many countries in Asia serve this dish with cold chicken. Sort of just like a tradition and it balances out with the steamy oil rice. I totally forgot what this cafe was called however you can find this dish in almost every food street. I tried this specific dish out at the Malacca food street.

3. Renn Thai's Beef, Chicken and Pork Satays:
Like I said in a previous post, our family is obsessed with satays. This dish, however, is actually not the traditional Singapore satays but the Thai satays. It tasted a lot more lemony (most likely due to the lemongrass). I would recommend to just try out the satays in Singapore and Malaysia in general because they are all made wonderfully.

 4. Boulangerie's Chicken Pie:
Okay. I admit. They might not have made these in -house but they were such good pies!! They came out steaming out and the moment you cut it open the aromatic cream sauce starts pouring out. The chicken inside was not very dry like almost all the pies out there but instead very soft. The pastry was very moist and crisp yet didn't feel like you were biting in to plain butter. In addition to just savory snacks, they also have an assortment of different pastries and cakes. The convenience of this cafe was also a plus since we were all so rushed to head over to Sentosa, we didn't have much time to grab breakfast. This pie especially made a great starting meal of the day! If you plan on heading over to this sweet cafe, Boulangerie is located on the main floor in Festive hotel (part of Resorts World Sentosa Singapore).

5. J. Co's Mini Donuts:
Feeling a desire to have a midnight snack during New Years, we decided to buy some mini donuts from J. Co. We saw this coffee shop almost everywhere we went therefore we gave in and wanted to try it. These one-bite donuts were so delicious! They were all filled with either jam or cream and topped with icing or sprinkles. The icing was very crispy and crunchy (especially if you refrigerate it for 3-4 hours) so when you bite in to it, the icing would flake. Absolutely delicious. We als saved some for breakfast and they definitely made the day! Definitely a recommendation for a small snack. I'm pretty sure we found one of these coffee shops in every Malaysian mall we went in to however the specific mall we bought these from was the KSL Mall.

Malaysia: Fatty Crab Restoran

As ironic as it is, I don't actually eat shellfish therefore my trip to Fatty Crab Restoran comprised of me sitting and waiting for my family to finish eating their seafood. However, the few non-crustacean dishes we had were just as delicious as the seafood.

Once again, we ordered satays. I feel like we have slowly stepped on board of a ritual where ordering satays are essential. Fatty Crab's satays generally tasted pretty good however some parts were a bit burnt. I liked how you are able to order them one by one instead of having to waste a bunch if you order too much. Nothing special about these satays but I guess it made a good appetizer.

This was, hands down, the second best dish I had this trip. When the waiter brings out this steamy, fragrant fish you can already smell the deliciousness. The fish was amazingly fresh, the flesh was extraordinarily smooth and soft. Not only was the fish delicious but the sauce drenching the fish was also amazing. We mixed some with the fried rice we had and it was heavenlyyyyy.

In the above image, you may be able to see the fried rice peeking out in the corner. Like I said, the fish was the second best and the fried rice steals the first place. The fried rice was fried so amazingly and had hints of a crab fat fragrance. The rice itself also deserves a mention. It didn't make the mistake of being overly sticky that it felt more like you're eating sushi however it wasn't so dry that is almost choked you. The texture and the wetness of the rice was just right and had you scooping for more. Don't worry because they didn't throw away the tradition of the egg slices in traditional fried rice but they did step it up a notch by crsipfying parts of the shredded egg. Whether or not you like fried rice generally, don't make a mistake by not getting this!

I didn't eat any of the seafood however both my parents gave it an 8 while my sister gave it a 9

Overall this restaurant's food was reaaaallllyyyy good. If you enjoy sitting at a more traditional, semi-outdoor, noisy restaurant this would be perfect. We went pretty early, at around 5pm, and we easily found a spot. As soon as the clock ticks 7, lines start forming and even television presenters with giant cameras will show up. As a family of 4, we spent around HKD$600 on this meal yet it was definitely worth it because the seafood and everything was very fresh.

The address is below however if you tell a taxi driver you want to go to Fatty Crab, I'm sure they would know.

Malaysia: KSL Hotel's Infusion Cafe

Having visited Malaysia last Christmas, our whole family have come to a realization that Malaysia's food was beyond perfection! A quick example would be the KSL hotel cafe- Infusion. Having stayed at the big city, Kuala Lumpur, for 5 nights we travelled all the way down to Johor Bahru. We finally arrived at around 9pm and literally dreaded the hunt for dinner. We searched around the KSL mall (situated right beside the hotel) however all the shops seemed to be shutting and if not, they would shut when we walked past eyeing, threatening them for overtime shift. Eventually we ended up just eating at the hotel cafe which we didn't expect much from it. OH HOW WRONG WE WERE.

The beef and chicken satays came first and after being on a car for 6-7 hours, these were AMAZING. However, honestly speaking, if I were to go back again NOT so hungry, I think it would still be good but just not AMAZING. The meat was very tender and the crispy parts were just right. The sauce that accompanied it made it impossible to resist dunking your entire satay in to it. Definitely recommended for an appetizer.

Unfortunately, I don't remember what this pizza was called but it was certainly delicious. The crust was very crispy while the center remained soft and chewy. The texture reminded me a bit of pita bread or roti due to it's chewiness. Like many readers, I do not like onions however, since it was so thinly sliced and delicate, you don't notice the pungent taste yet it definitely brings out some flavor. Every taste in this pizza worked well with each other. For example, the tomato sauce was very sweet and non-sour therefore it didn't overwhelm the taste of the cheese. One thing I would criticize would actually be the cheese. Frankly, I prefer a crumbly type of cheese rather than a very rubbery and elastic cheese therefore I wasn't too impressed. I would recommend this if you are a fan of thin, crispy pizzas, mushrooms, and a plainer, meatless topping.

Looking at the fact that I am not even able to take a decent picture of this reinforces the statement I am about to make below. Please. DO NOT GET THIS. Our family wanted to try something traditional from Johor Bahru so we made the mistake of getting... this. To this day, I am actually still not sure what the actual ingredients were but they were along the lines of spaghetti drenched in some sort of peanut sauce.  The peanut sauce was way too grainy and when you indulge in a spoonful of spaghetti it literally gags you. This put us off in trying it again in a more traditional restaurant which I believe actually would've tasted better. I do not recommend this.

I forgot to take a picture of the best dish of the night which was the fish and chips. I had to crop this out from a family photo which explains the impatient hand of my dad. The fish and chips was definitely the best dish of the night. The crispiness of the coating was just right while the actual cod was very soft and smooth with plentiful of flavor  The coating did not takeover the taste of the cod and the sauces that came with the dish was also worth a mention.

Overall the Infusion Cafe in KSL Hotel is definitely worth the try. It certainly surprised us with serving high-quality, finger licking dishes at around 10pm. The atmosphere was also very relaxing while the price was great. We ordered 4 dishes with 2 fresh-squeezed drinks and it did not excel HKD$300.

They also serve buffets for breakfast and dinner and those times seem a little bit crowded (I recommend reservations) however if you are looking for a meal during a non-peak hour, it's generally quiet. If you are planing on heading over, the adress is below.
